He was born in Blackpool on 2 June 1945. He was awarded his PhD degree in 1969 at the University College of Swansea. After a period of postdoctoral research in Swansea, he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Salford in 1973, where he remained for the rest of his career. Austin’s principal research interests focused on infrared and Raman matrix isolation spectroscopy, particularly applied to the investigation of molecular interactions and conformational isomerism. He was also one of the first to report on the so-called ‘blue-shifting’ hydrogen bonds.
Austin served as President of the International Committee of EUCMOS (1994–2016) and as Editor or Assistant Editor for the Journal of Molecular Structure (1979-2009). He passed away in Bolton on 25 June 2021.
